| My search for the feminine began when I realized I didn’t know myself as a woman other
than in relationship to the masculine, and unconsciously internalized high gloss images,
cultural standards, ideals and beliefs. By outer appearances I conveyed a sense of feminine
independence with a self-defined stance, yet, deep within I yearned to know myself
beneath the layers of veneer and societal conditioning. I wondered what was intrinsically
feminine? Where were the images and stories that reflected and honored my experiences
as a woman in bodily, sexual and sacred form?
The journey began with my search within and without. I read volumes of books,
many written by women who came before me and asked as I did. Here I discovered a
trove of scholarly research and archeological work which had uncovered Her story in symbolic
language and images inscribed on cave and temple walls, painted on beautiful pottery
and frescos, etched in bone and stone, imprinted in clay. A vast new world opened as
Her form, carved and chiseled in hand-held statues and great sculptures, with breasts,
hips, thighs, buttocks and sacred vulva adorned with symbolic markings, unfolded before
me with each turning page.
Giver, nurturer and sustainer of life, She had been revered in antiquity, across continents
with a thousand names and faces. Yet all represented the One — the Great Goddess.
Worshiped and celebrated in art and all of nature, She was immanent and indwelling
within woman, in all her earthy embodiment.
This was the source ground I was seeking. The veneer began to crack as I discovered
that within these very stories and images lay my divine nature, my feminine qualities and
values, my sacred body, and my sexuality.
Every cell in my body vibrated and resonated in remembrance of something long
ago buried, yet ever-present within, waiting to be awakened, embraced and
celebrated... the eternal Feminine.
I believe reclaiming our multi-faceted feminine dimension and heritage, is to give
spiritual and psychological meaning to our lives and experiences as women. Archetypal
and timeless, the images and myths are every bit as relevant today as they were for our
ancestors, living and emanating through us in full radiance as guides to wisdom and
embodied wholeness.
To consciously engage the eternal Feminine is to shift from mere intellectual understanding
alone to direct experience. Calling for vulnerability, She requires us to descend
into the depths of our being where we explore and learn to love our own earth/body,
know our sexuality as sacred, immerse ourselves in the watery realms of our own true
feeling values, honor our emotions, and cultivate and trust our innate wisdom.
In opening to the vast resources and mysteries of Her sacred way, we connect to our
deepest nature, and discover the original blessing and beauty of being woman.
And as we call out to Her, She calls back to us to Re-member, Remember...
